INTODUCTION
Nokia was the world leader in mobile phones in 2000 era. The smartphone of those times were dominated by the Symbian OS and Nokia was a dominant player in that ecosystem. At the time, every Indian’s the first choice was a Nokia, as well as their first mobile phone. Nokia was the first mobile company to provide a 2MP camera in the Indian market. Suddenly in 2008 or 2009, the company faced a downfall.
Many reasons were behind the demise of the Legendary Brand. “No one talks about these 5 points.”
- Not adapting to the market : 2007-2010 were the years in which the market saw sky rocket increase of capacitive touch displays, but Nokia failed to capitalize on the chance. Nokia was still going with keypad or resistive touchscreens in most of their offering. Company focuses on hardware, while other companies focus on software.
- Software : In 2007, Apple introduced the iPhone series using iOS (just for iPhone). After one year, Google introduced Android OS (which is open freely); these two operating systems dominated at the moment. Nokia is not adopting Android OS, but other companies, such as Samsung, HTC, ASUS, and Micromax, are adapting. Nokia focus on their own Symbian OS.
- Deal with the wrong company (Windows): The company made the biggest mistake by dealing with Microsoft to implement Windows on their phones in 2011. The OS was not user friendly, every one away from this OS. more application was not available in windows store as well as developers were not interested. windows phone run with windows 8.0,8.1,10
- Lake of innovation: Rather than focusing on user requirements and innovation, Nokia was focused on regaining all of the market share it had lost. Also, the company does not invest in research and development.
- Marketing: Nokia never had a great smartphone marketing strategy, unlike its competitors. What have Apple and Samsung done? Every year, they announce a new smartphone version with enhanced features and services. These marketing messages were all about building excitement and anticipation. It kept people interested and drew new customers.
CONCLUSION
However, things began to change with the entry of Apple and Google in 2007,2008. Nokia underestimated the threat from new entrants, failed to understand the changing customer preferences, and delayed its smartphone segment entry. Everyone will remember Nokia’s downfall as the example of how a single decision turned a profitable business into a bankrupt corporation. HMD Global acquired a 10-year agreement with Nokia in 2016 to use Nokia Banding on smartphones or tablets. Nowadays, HMD Global isn’t producing good smartphones. Let’s see what happens in the future.
