What is the real story behind Dhurandhar?

The movie Dhurandhar isn’t just another action thriller—it’s a story inspired by real-world espionage, covert missions, and geopolitical tensions. At its core, the film follows an undercover Indian agent who infiltrates the criminal underworld of Karachi to dismantle a dangerous terror network.

But what makes Dhurandhar truly intriguing is how it blends fiction with reality. Drawing loose inspiration from real events like terror attacks and intelligence operations, the film creates a gripping narrative that feels both cinematic and disturbingly real.

In this blog, we’ll explore the real story behind Dhurandhar, uncovering how much of it is true, what it’s inspired by, and where the film takes creative liberty.

Is Dhurandhar based on a true story?

To begin with Dhurandhar 1 & 2 itself is not based on any particular real-life incident. In fact, there is no such thing as an Operation Dhurandhar recorded anywhere. And Ranveer Singh’s fictional character (even through it was rumored that he was based on Indian Army officer Major Mohit Sharma)

As it is mentioned by the makers of the movie , NO, Dhurandhar is not based on a single, documented real life operation. But that does not mean the film is completely driven by fiction. Like the first part there are shown many actual real life incidents which happened. But it doesn’t recreate the past, it blends the real life incidents into extra exaggerated scenes for the thriller .That’s basically given in a typical Bollywood movie .

Real Life incidents shown in the movie.

1.The 26/11 terror strikes

Dhurandhar draws inspiration from events like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, it would likely portray coordinated urban attacks, emergency response chaos, and intelligence operations. However, no official confirmation exists that the film directly recreates these events. While Dhurandhar is not confirmed to directly portray the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, its themes of terrorism and national response appear to be influenced by real incidents that have shaped similar narratives in the Indian cinema.

2.IC-814 High jacking

The film references one of the India’s most controversial hostage crises .Flight from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked and taken to Kandahar.Government had to release terrorists to save passengers. The themes of national security often borrow from this event because it shows how high-stakes decisions are made under pressure.

3.Karachi’s Lyari Gang wars

The Lyari’s gang wars weren’t some random street fights-they were full-blown urban wars that turned parts of Karachi into no-go war zones for years. These gangs were used by political parties for vote control, intimidation and territorial dominance. While Dhurandhar may draw inspiration from similar real-world conflicts involving gang violence, political connections, and territorial control. These elements are often adapted in films to create a realistic crime narrative.

Real life Characters

1.Rehman Dakait

Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar is inspired by the notorious Pakistani gangster Abdul Rehman Baloch from Karachi’s Layari ,known for his violent rise, extortion, political links before his 2009 encounter death. While the film brings the character to popular attention, opinions differ, with some stating his real-life impact area compared to his portrayed ,larger than life image.

2. SP Choudhary Aslam

Sanjay Dutt as SP Chaudhary Aslam – Inspired by Chaudhary Aslam khan
Plays the ‘explosive’ role in the movie. The character is based on late SP Aslam Khan, known as a top pakistani cop led the Lyari task force and was killed in 2014 bombings. Dhurandhar portrays Chaudhary Aslam as an intense and uncompromising figure in his fight against crime.

3. Major Iqbal

Arjun Rampal as Major Iqbal–Inspired by Ilyas Kashmiri  a ruthless ISI officer and the primary antagonist.Based on real life incidents  he was linked to multiple high profile terror plots, including 2008 Mumbai attacks, and was once described by global intelligence agencies as one of the most dangerous militants. He was killed in US drone strike in 2011.

4. Uzair Baloch

Actor Danish Pandor portrays the notorious Karachi gangster Uzair Baloch , highlighting the rise and criminal activities in Layari after the death of Rehman Dakait. He was a prominent gangster linked to over 50 criminal cases, including extortion, kidnapping, and the murder of rival gang leader Arshad Pappu. He was later detained by Interpol in Dubai in 2014 and later received a 12 year jail sentence in Karachi’s security landscape.

Dhurandhar is not a confirmed true story, nor does it directly portray specific real-life events or characters. Instead, it appears to draw inspiration from real-world themes like terrorism, intelligence operations, and gang conflicts to create a gripping fictional narrative.

This mix of reality and fiction is what makes the film intriguing—but also why it’s important to separate facts from assumptions. While elements may feel real, there is no verified evidence linking the story or characters to actual incidents or individuals.

As audiences, it’s easy to assume that intense and realistic films are based on true events. But in the case of Dhurandhar, the reality is far more nuanced—it’s a cinematic interpretation, not a documented history.

What do you think—should films clearly state when they are inspired by real events, or does the mystery make them more engaging?
